Give your baby a great start in life
Caring for yourself when pregnant will help your chances of staying healthy and having a healthy baby.
Here are 5 tips to having a healthy, prenatal lifestyle:
- See your doctor.
As soon as you think you are pregnant, make an appointment to see your doctor. If you need help finding a doctor, call Member Services at 1-800-521-6860 or go to Find a Provider. Call to sign up for the Keystone First Bright Start® program and keep all your scheduled doctors' appointments. - Talk with your doctor about vitamins and medicines.
Talk to your doctor about taking prenatal vitamins and folic acid every day (some prenatal vitamins may already have folic acid in them). Both of these medicines are covered by Keystone First.
Also, ask your doctor before stopping or starting any new medicines. Even some over-the-counter medicines can cause problems for the baby. If you have a question that needs to be answered right away and your doctor is not available, call the Nurse Call Line at 1-866-431-1514. Specially trained nurses are available 24 hours, 7 days a week. However, please remember that the Nurse Call Line does not take the place of your doctor. Always follow-up with your doctor. - Take care of your teeth.
Make an appointment to see your dentist in your 2nd trimester. Women who get dental care when pregnant are less likely to have a baby born too early and too small. - Exercise and eat healthy.
Regular exercise will help during your pregnancy and recovery, after delivering your baby. Make sure to check with your doctor before starting any kind of exercise routine.
Eat a variety of fruits, vegetables, meat, beans, fish, eggs, low-fat dairy products, eggs, and whole grain foods. By eating healthy, you will help your baby get all the right nutrients he or she needs. You will also give yourself more energy! - Stay away.
Drugs, alcohol and exposure to smoking will harm your baby even before he or she is born! Being around others who smoke can also harm your baby.
